RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) in Ronkonkoma is in the running to keep a coveted spot on the list of top U.S. airports. MacArthur is once again a nominee for USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for “Best Small Airport.”
As OnSachem News reported in January 2020, national newspaper USA Today named MacArthur #6 in the Best Small Airport category. The annual competition is underway again, and online voting is open now through noon Feb. 1, 2021. Anyone can vote one time each day. USA Today will announce the winners on Feb. 12, 2021.
The Town of Islip owns and operates the airport.
“We are honored to be one of the 15 airports selected by a panel of experts,” said Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We are hoping our loyal base of travelers and the Long Island community will vote each day.”
Best10 describes the nominees as “smaller, friendlier airports” that “excel with their commercial flight offerings, easy access and amenities.” The small airport category includes airports with fewer than 10 million passengers each year.
“It’s gratifying that the experts participating in the USA Today 10Best Awards recognize MacArthur’s ability to conveniently serve New York travelers,” said Aviation Commissioner Shelley LaRose-Arken. “MacArthur Airport is working hard to provide an excellent customer experience.”
The voting page describes MacArthur Airport as an alternative for airline passengers “wishing to avoid the big, crowded New York area airports (JFK and LaGuardia) will find a peaceful alternative in the town of Islip.”
Also in the New York suburbs, Westchester County Airport-White Plains was a Best10 nominee last year, but USA Today did not select the airport as a nominee this time around.
